Behind The Brand: Epically Epic

We invited Allison of Epically Epic to talk about her potions and lotions and penchant for delightful smells…

Tell us about your brand’s backstory

In CubaEpic was a favorite word among my friends when I was a teenager. The name Epically Epic is silly, like me.

I have always been in love with scented bath products and collected way more of them than anyone could need. Early influences were The Body Shop, Lush, and an Alaskan soap company called Seasoaps. Lush’s nearest location used to be in Canada (in the early 2000’s) and it would take forEVER for a package from them to arrive. I can still remember the giddy feeling when I got to open a box of bubble bar slices, lotion, soap, and bath bombs. It was hard to keep it to one bath a day…

In 2008, I remember having a discussion with some friends about a new direction for my life. One of the possibilities I mentioned was starting a soap company. Could I actually make a business out of my scent obsession? It just didn’t seem possible. But, a couple of months later, I tried making a few soaps and they turned out kind of okay. After that I dedicated all free time to learning more and getting my company started. I would bike all over Chicago in the summer heat looking for any essential oils and soap supplies that could be found.

On October 18, 2008 Epically Epic Soap Co. opened on Etsy. At first I specialized in meticulously detailed melt-and-pour soap techniques. Some early projects were ice cream bar soaps, citrus slices, and a clear blue soap with moons and stars floating around in it.

What is your brand best known for?

These days I don’t get to make much soap at all, although I still love it. I’m a mom of two little boys now and can’t work all day and night like I used to. Lately I’m most known for lip balms and lip tints.

What inspires you?

I can find inspiration in nature, food, cooking, music, and dreams. My mind is always open to new ideas; I just wish I had time to make them all.

Soap MakingWhat are your 3 favourite products that you’ve created, and why?

Making my own scent blends is the most creative and challenging (and fun) part of my job.

The three scents I’m happiest with are Varadero Beach (White lilies, saltwater, lemon verbena, and clean laundry), Luminaria (A papery scent with melting vanilla candle wax, smoke, myrrh, and frankincense), and Turkish Delight (Sweetened rosewater, powdered sugar, and a little bit of pistachio.)

What are your 3 best sellers?

Sweet stuff! Marshmallow, Strawberry Pancakes, and Pumpkin Pie lip balms.

Favourite part of your job?

So many things, but the best part is coming up with a new collection of products and getting to present it to my customers.

Solid Lotions

How do you want you/your brand to be remembered?

This question scares me a little! I hope to be doing this for many more years, but if I’m remembered I hope a few people will think of getting a giddy feeling when they opened a package from EE. I hope my products bring a little extra fun into your life.

And now, the fun bits…

Whipped Body ButtersWhat was your dream job growing up?

As a kid I wanted to be an artist, and did do that for several years.

However, if I’d known it was possible, Soap Company Owner would have been my dream job.

Thanks to e-commerce, I can be my introvert self and work from home, design and print my own labels, and not deal with the stress of owning a brick and mortar shop.

What would I find in your refrigerator right now?

Salad fixings like arugula, avocado, mushrooms, carrots, and hot peppers, no salad dressing, no mayonnaise, lots of milk, watermelon, and lunch box supplies for my kids, and rocky road ice cream.

Would you rather fight one horse-size duck, or 100 duck-size horses?

Those both sound pretty adorable, but I’ll take 100 duck-size horses.

Been a fan of Epic since I saw them advertised in Gothic Beauty Magazine. Alli’s stuff always smells unbelievable and never causes any issues to my sensitive skin. I like to say that she is a “scent” alchemist, my personal favorite is her La Playa. It smells exactly like you’ve been on the beach all day it’s truly unbelievable.

EE has played a special role in my life. My friend sent me soaps, solid lotion and lib balms immediately after we lost everything in a house fire and were homeless. I had the smell of ashes stuck in my nose. I didn’t use them right away but instead took them out when I wanted to smell them. The fragrance was incredible and for that moment everything was all right.

Six and a half years later I am an avid fan who awaits every release and collects her beautiful labels into a sticker book. As a fellow mama I know how unpredictable an artisan shop can be – you must be able to bend, placing your children and family first. She would always be remembered.

Her work is impeccable and she is so sweet. She knows my story and has gone above and beyond. If I ever think a smoky scent might trigger my PTSD she has helped.
