Behind The Brand: Pretty Serious Cosmetics

WE WRANGLED KAZ AND BEN, OWNERS OF PRETTY SERIOUS, AWAY FROM THEIR BUSY SCHEDULES TO HAVE A BRIEF CHAT ABOUT ALL THINGS POLISH…

kaz.jpgTell us about your brand’s backstory

I’d been involved in the nail community as a blogger for many years and when the opportunity arose for us to start our own nail brand, I jumped at the chance. It was something I had always wanted to do but seemed like it was out of reach. Then all of a sudden, it wasn’t such a pipe dream any more! This was five years ago when indie brands were still kind of scarce.

What is your brand best known for?

This is a hard question. I honestly have no idea. Consistent quality? Quirky names? Excellent cremes? Leigh Youngs’ amazing Pretty Serious art?

indieconWhat inspires you?

Much like writers are always told to write what they know, I make what I know. I have an enormous vintage polish collection and I am a massive nerd for vintage makeup and advertising and when I create collections for Pretty Serious I try and mix a little vintage flair in with some modern quirk.

What are your 3 favourite polishes that you’ve created, and why?

Oh man, don’t make me choose between my children! I think they would have to be Khepri’s Amulet, Haddonfield and An Uzi from Daddy. Khepri’s was based on my vintage white whale – Streetwear Hippy Dippy. The glow in that polish is just insane. Haddonfield is one of those shades that just came out exactly how I wanted it too. It’s the perfect Halloween shade. Uzi surprised me – I didn’t expect to love it as much as I did.

PS 2What are your 3 best sellers?

Peace on Earth, Can’t Take The Sky and Pastel Pets collection. We have trouble keeping these in stock!

Favourite part of your job?

Creating and theming collections and graphic design.

How do you want you/your brand to be remembered?

I want people to be able to see how much of myself I pour into my creations.

ps

AND NOW, THE FUN BITS…

What is your favourite thing to spend money on?

Vintage polish. Wheels and Dollbaby clothing.

PS3If you joined the circus, what would you perform?

Something with trained dogs.

If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?

Invisibility. Definitely.
