WE CHATTED WITH ROSS OF WILD HYBRID ABOUT HIS AMAZING, COMPLEX PERFUMES AND HIS ABILITY TO TEMPORARILY BLEND IN DURING A ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE.

Wild Hybrid has been in existence since 2009. I started with a small selection of perfumes and created soap and jewellery as well.  My perfume offerings grew over the years and when I moved to Australia in 2015 I decided to concentrate solely on perfume.

Blends can start from inspiration first (my preference) or sometimes just from experimentation.  The blend that had the longest development time was I Miss My Sky which took over a year to get where it is now.  Oh, how it vexed me!

 

What is your brand best known for?

Interesting development on the skin. I like my scents to tell a story as they bloom on the skin.  Lasting power – my formulation is Eau de Parfum strength.  Aquatics with tang.

What inspires you?

I have a degree in zoology, am a trained naturopath and I have always been close to the sea so nature is a critical element in my inspiration.  I also have a love of pop culture, mythology and dark cultural references.  I believe that a scent doesn’t need to be pretty to be evocative and wearable (but it doesn’t hurt).

 

bottles.pngWhat are your 3 favourite products that you’ve created, and why?

Bordello – it is so complex with an unusual confluence of elements like cocoa, blackberry and elderflower CO2 extract.  It was awesome as a room/linen spray as well.  The Black Queen – the rose just murmurs under the surface of the darkness.  Back From The Dead Red – the frangipani/leather/vanilla combo was just sexy as hell.

 

What are your 3 best sellers?

Demon Girl – this was the one that got people talking and it’s just fun.  Fairy Ring – the dewy grass, damp soil and slightly floral mushroom character is really popular.  Summer Garden Party – the grassy, cookie, rose, honeysuckle combination is really summery and feminine

 

Favourite part of your job?

I love the creation aspect of this business and I really like reading people’s feedback – they get so passionate about scent!

How do you want you/your brand to be remembered?

As a business that has created challenging but wearable and memorable scents.

 

AND NOW, THE FUN BITS…

 

What was your dream job growing up?

I thought I would be a scientist when I was at school and I apply a very methodical approach to my creations (and in my real job – the one that pays the bills).

Probably not for long! I would probably blend right in in the mornings but after a coffee and shower I’d be screwed.

If you were an animated character, who would you be and why?

Hmmmm… I’m not big on animated entertainment.  I asked the team at work and Professor Frink from The Simpsons came up.  Not sure I’m comfortable with that!
