Behind The Brand: KBShimmer

We chatted with Christy and Jason of KBShimmer about their glittering crellies and the fun of naming polishes.

Christy-Headshot.jpgTell us about your brand’s backstory

I have always had a love of color and things that smell good (hello Strawberry Shortcake doll I am thinking of you!). From wearing bright clothes to wanting the most crayons to loads of smell good products in my home, color and scent made me happy.  When I was on vacation, I walked into a bath store full of handcrafted tub treats and body care, and with encouragement from my husband, I picked up supplies to start making products at home.  After months of testing and hundreds of batches, KBShimmer was launched in 2008.  Nail polish followed a few years after, when I stumbled upon polish ingredients at one of my suppliers.  I offered my first polish late in 2011 and our polish line really took off in 2012.  Nail polish is now the focus of KBShimmer and we are enjoying every minute creating colors and scented products for our customers.

What is your brand best known for?

KBShimmer really took off when we started offering crelly polishes, especially white polishes with glitter like our classic Oh Splat! While crelly polishes have always been popular, we strive to offer our customers a variety of polishes in fresh colors and finishes, and think we are known for high quality polishes that are on trend and accessible.  We were one of the first brands to keep stock at all times, and that really helped customers fall in love with us!

oh-splat2.jpgWhat inspires you?

Both Jason and I work on designing new polishes.  We are often inspired by our travels, nature, and sometimes even polish names!  We can see a beautiful shade of water that needs to be an aqua holo or have a name that screams for a bold red and create a polish that matches the inspiration. Trips to the zoo, out of the country, or even trending fashion can inspire a color or collection.

What are your 3 favourite polishes that you’ve created, and why?

That is a hard one; that is almost is like naming your favorite child, which is way easier as I only have one child, lol. I tend to have favorite polishes from each collection, but if I had to choose a top three, I would have to pick Shade Shifter.  That is a polish I reach for when heading out of town as its shifty nature allows it to match so much.  Orchidding Me? is also a favorite, the bright purple color is perfect on so many skin tones, and the holo rainbow is just WOW!  For my toes I love a good cream, so a neon like Color Me Rad makes me feel like it is beach season no matter the time of year.

Shade Shifter, Oh Splat! and our quick dry top coat, Clearly On Top have been top sellers since their release.

Favourite part of your job?

I enjoy so many parts of my job, but the part that really makes me laugh and use my creativity is naming polishes. I love putting a spin on idioms, popular slang or even song titles.  I can sit for hours giggling about future polish names.  While it can be hard to find the perfect name, when I hit on something like Flock This Way or Keep Palm and Carry On it just makes me happy.

How do you want you/your brand to be remembered?

I hope that people remember KBShimmer as an ethical brand producing quality, beautiful products that make them feel bold and beautiful.

And now, the fun bits…

What is your favourite thing to spend money on?

I love to travel, so if I had extra money and the time, I would book a trip to someplace tropical in a heartbeat. When I can’t travel, I spend money on books.  I love getting lost in a puzzling mystery, a contemporary romance, or something with a supernatural twist.  You will never find me far from my Kindle!

scrubs.JPGIf you could time travel, would you go to the past or future?

The future.  I like indoor plumbing too much to go backwards.  I think seeing all the advances we have made would be amazing!

Would you rather fight one horse-size duck, or 100 duck-size horses?

One horse sized duck.  Ducks waddle when they walk, and I hope I could out run a duck.  Yes, I am ignoring the whole flying aspect!  Jason says he is not a fighter, but if he had to pick, with his size 13 feet he could stomp all over 100 duck sized horses.
