Behind The Brand: Herba Apotheca

Herba Apotheca was a long awaited collision of a passionate hobby and lifestyle metamorphosing into a beautiful brand that allows me to explore, create and express my desires through my products.

As a child I was often enthralled with herbs, flowers and trees. As a teen, this changed into an interest not just with their beauty but with their traditional uses. With this came an otherworldly respect of the circle of nature and all that it entails that has stuck with me my whole life and has become something I love to share with others.

My goal is to create beautiful products, keeping them as simple, with as few man-made additives as possible and accentuating them all with the power of herbs.

The name Herba Apotheca came from me playing around with words during the business planning stages. I adore those really old-fashioned apothecaries, the ones you might imagine with dusty old bottles covered in webs and filled with potions and knew I wanted that word in the name. Herba is a latin word for herb of course! And it all just rolled off the tongue nicely!

I launched Herba Apotheca in October 2017, so I am very fresh to the industry while being very old in my practise.

What is your brand best known for?

From the get go, everyone seemed to go nuts for my cold-process soaps so it has been something I’ve enjoyed rolling with and expanding on. The love from customers is nicely balanced between all the products, but I’d definitely say my Goddess line, Draconic Dreams and Neem products are particularly loved.

I think people are beginning to enjoy a more simple lifestyle, with ingredients they know and can trace back to the source with little adulteration in between.

soapsWhat inspires you?

I am inspired by so many things it’s really difficult to pinpoint them.  I am inspired by the age lines in a piece of wood, flakes of rust on old metal, aged paint works, the way a flower looks when it just opens. The aroma of something inspires me by bringing back a memory or creating a new one. I have learnt over time to take a breath each day and see the beauty in relatively mundane things we take for granted with a fast-paced lifestyle.

What are your 3 favourite products that you’ve created, and why?

It’s a bit hard to choose 3 favourite products of mine. Number 1 would definitely be my Goddess Herblore Lotion. I created the blend at a particularly stressful time in my life when I was yearning for relief from all the ‘noise’ in my mind.

Number 2 would have to be my neem soap, Indian Lilac. It’s so simplistic in it’s beauty, but truly luxurious to use and one I keep on hand for myself permanently. Lastly, I would say my Dragon’s Blood wax melt. I adore wax melts and this one makes my home feel like it has a veil of mystery flowing through it.

My three best-sellers are Nag Champa wax melts, Draconic Dreams Soap and the Goddess Lotion.

Favourite part of your job?

Oooh, I love every part of my job so much! I love the initial idea of a creation, playing around with ingredients to get it exactly where I want it, and if it all comes together, then woohoo! I celebrate. I adore packing my orders to make even the unboxing a bit of an experience for my customers. As a solely online business, I feel that my presentation needs to bring a feeling of warmth to each and every customer. Mostly I love that I am able to share a part of ‘me’ with my products. Every item is a dedication of my time, love and passion and I hope that is what shows through in the products.

I would love for Herba Apotheca to be known as a trusted brand with a variety of herbal based products and one that has your well-being at the forefront when creating products. I would love to be remembered as someone who didn’t just treat my customers as a ‘number’ but as a valued individual whose needs are heard and questions answered.

What was your dream job growing up?

My dream job when growing up was to be an artist. I majored in art, and loved to use my creativity to create many rustic-looking elemental and environmental pieces. Being out in nature was my thing, and now being able to replicate it in my work is like all the little twists and turns life has taken me on were destined to lead me here.

meltsIf you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?

Hmmm. Tough call. I am not really a superhero person, but if I had to choose, I would go with Marvel’s Storm. I think being able to manipulate the elements would be pretty cool. Or Groot! Groot is a pretty cool tree dude I’d say!

If you could time travel, would you go to the past or future?

It would be nice to go to the future and see my family and check out where things are at with the world, but on the other hand, ignorance is bliss they say, so perhaps I would rather travel to the past and absorb some traditions of another life-time. Yes, the past sounds good. I think it would help me to appreciate a little more the hard work of those who have come before us.
